Two women have been arrested by Katugastota police anti-corruption officers for allegedly hiding drugs inside an electric lantern. Acting on a tip-off regarding drug trafficking, officers arrived at a house in Kandy in search of a suspect. However, they found only the suspect’s wife and mother, who claimed he was not present.

Upon inspecting the electric lantern in the house, police discovered 11.28 grams of heroin and 3.75 grams of crystal meth (ice) concealed within the wiring compartment.

The suspect’s wife, 38, a mother of one, and her 60-year-old aunt were taken into custody. The wife confessed that her husband, who is addicted to heroin, had convinced her to participate in the drug trade to cover financial losses caused by his addiction.

The two women were presented before the Kandy Magistrate's Court and were granted permission to be detained for four days for further questioning. Meanwhile, the main suspect has fled the area, and police are continuing their search for his apprehension.
