The Meteorological Department has forecast rainfall of 75–100mm and wind speeds of 50–60kmph. The cyclone situation may intensify, but the depression is expected to move away by tomorrow.
Flooded roads, including sections of the Jaffna-Kandy A-09 road and Colombo-Batticaloa road, have disrupted transportation. Highways such as the Anuradhapura-Padeniya road have reopened, but bridges like the Oluvil-Kali Odai bridge remain damaged.
Floodwaters have submerged paddy fields and destroyed over 4,800 acres of farmland, with Mannar reporting significant losses. Thirty-seven main tanks are overflowing, and water levels in rivers like Deduru Oya, Mahaweli, and Kelani continue to rise, prompting warnings for low-lying areas.
Landslide red alerts have been issued for Kandy, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya, and Matale districts. Residents in high-risk areas have been urged to evacuate immediately.
Six deaths, six missing persons, and 17 injuries have been reported. Among the victims, four students have been found dead after a tractor overturned in Ampara, while operations continue to locate others still missing.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has directed officials to prioritize on-ground relief efforts for affected communities. Deputy Minister Namal Karunaratne confirmed severe agricultural losses due to the floods, with relief teams and the Navy actively involved in rescue and aid operations.
