A controversy has erupted over the alleged doctorate of Speaker of Parliament Asoka Ranwala, with various parties demanding clarity on whether he legitimately holds a PhD.
Initially introduced as Dr. Asoka Sapumal Ranwala upon assuming the role of Speaker of the Tenth Parliament, his title was also reflected on the official website of the Parliament. However, amidst growing questions about his doctoral credentials, the "Doctor" title has been removed from the website.
During the Cabinet media briefing this morning (10), Cabinet Media Spokesperson Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa faced questions about the issue. Meanwhile, Hiru News sought clarification directly from the Speaker.
In response, Speaker Ranwala stated that he would address the matter at an appropriate time.
The Speaker reportedly used the title “Dr.” in introductions prior to contesting the general elections. After his election as Speaker, his name was listed as Dr. Asoka Ranwala on the official Parliament of Sri Lanka website.
The issue gained traction when university professors and others questioned on social media whether the doctorate was legally granted or recognized. Speculation intensified following the removal of the “Dr.” title from his name on the Parliament’s website.
Responding to an inquiry by Hiru, Speaker Ranwala stated he would address the allegations at the appropriate time.
