Marine research activities in Sri Lankan waters in the Indian Ocean is set to resume after January 2025. Vice Chairwoman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Qin Boyong, who met with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake yesterday (18), expressed hope that marine research activities, which have been halted for various reasons, would resume after the ban ends.
Ms. Qin Boyong stated that there are plans to restart maritime research activities, which were temporarily halted for various reasons, along with initiating relevant projects.
The previous government imposed the one-year ban on all foreign research vessels visiting Sri Lanka for research purposes, and the ban is still in effect.
Qin Boyong's statement follows a recent visit by President Dissanayake to India, where, during a joint press conference with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the President reaffirmed his commitment that Sri Lankan territory would not be used to the detriment of India's security, marking a significant pledge to strengthen security cooperation between the two nations.
Furthermore, she mentioned that Chinese companies intend to establish themselves in the Hambantota investment zone, aiming to provide Sri Lanka with better global access. She also revealed that preparations are underway to warmly welcome President Anura Kumara Dissanayake during his future visit to China.
Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath, Deputy Speaker Dr. Rizvie Salih and committee member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Mr. Ma Youxiang, among others, were present at this event.
