The Sri Lanka Navy and Coast Guard seized two Indian fishing boats and apprehended 17 Indian fishermen for poaching in Sri Lankan waters during a special operation on December 23, 2024, in the sea area north of Mannar.
The Navy continues to conduct regular patrols to combat illegal fishing practices that affect local fishermen's livelihoods. During this operation, the North Central Naval Command observed a group of Indian fishing boats engaging in illegal activities and responded by deploying Fast Attack Craft and Inshore Patrol Craft. The operation successfully resulted in the seizure of the two boats and the arrest of the 17 fishermen.
The seized boats and fishermen were brought to the Talaimannar Pier and will be handed over to the Mannar Fisheries Inspector for legal proceedings. So far in 2024, the Navy has detained 72 Indian fishing boats and 554 Indian fishermen, who have been handed over to authorities for further legal action.
