President Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced today (23) that a joint statement will soon be released following high-level discussions with the United States regarding the recent imposition of tariffs on Sri Lankan exports.

Speaking at a political rally in Ratnapura, the Head of State described the talks as “productive,” assuring the public that the outcomes will be revealed in a joint statement.

The dialogue between the parties took place yesterday (22), focusing on the 44% reciprocal tariff recently imposed by the United States on Sri Lankan goods, primarily affecting the island nation’s vital apparel and textile sector.

The United States remains Sri Lanka’s largest export destination, accounting for approximately USD 3 billion in exports in 2024, while imports from the U.S. total just USD 441 million.

This significant trade imbalance has been cited as the rationale behind the tariff hike, part of a broader policy stance under U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration.
