India's Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test cricket, following reports that the BCCI selectors were preparing to remove him from the captaincy.
The 38-year-old made the surprise announcement in his own style, posting a picture of his Test cap along with a simple note on Instagram: "Hello everyone, I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It's been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years."
During his Test career, Sharma faced 67 matches from which he scored 12 hundreds and 18 half-centuries at an average of 40.57. He also confirmed that he will continue to represent India in the ODI format.
Rohit had previously retired from T20 Internationals after India's World Cup triumph in 2022 and led India to the Champions Trophy title in Dubai.
His leadership faced heavy criticism after India suffered a 3-0 home defeat to New Zealand last year and lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia.
The selectors were reportedly preparing to name a new captain for India’s upcoming tour of England.
