The National People's Power (NPP) has successfully taken control of both the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council and the Kolonnawa Municipal Council today (18).
In Nuwara Eliya, the NPP secured power with the support of two Ceylon Workers' Congress MPs.
During the local government elections, the NPP won 12 seats, while the Samagi Jana Balawegaya secured 4, the United National Party 3, independent groups 3, the Ceylon Workers' Congress 2, and the People's United Front 1.
The inaugural meeting of the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council was held today under the patronage of Central Local Government Commissioner A.M.K.P.K. Chamila Atapattu.
Upali Waliyasekara of the National People's Power was elected as the new Mayor, securing 14 votes, and Sivajothi Yogaraja of the Ceylon Workers' Congress was elected as the Deputy Mayor, also with 14 votes.
Separately, the NPP also took power in the Kolonnawa Municipal Council, supported by a Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP.
Monty Dhammika was elected as the Chairman of the Kolonnawa Municipal Council, with Senaka Saman Senevirathne named as the Deputy Chairman.
