Sri Lanka Electricity Board (CEB) trade unions have announced plans for a massive protest demonstration next week. They state that the government's attention must be drawn to the injustice caused to the CEB and its employees by the proposed Electricity Sector Reforms Bill.

The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) increased electricity tariffs by 15% from June 12, following recommendations from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to adjust tariffs to cover costs.

The "Jana Aragalaya" (People's Struggle) movement organised demonstrations in various locations to protest this increase.

In response to the proposed amendments to the Electricity Act and the government's actions, CEB trade union leaders held a discussion in Colombo regarding measures to address the perceived injustices to the CEB and its employees.

During this discussion, the trade unions stated that they would hold a protest in front of the CEB head office on July 22, urging the government to address their concerns.

Separately, the Electricity Consumers' Association has accused the government of a conspiracy to hand over Sri Lanka's energy sector to India.

This accusation was made when the association visited the Opposition Leader's office to brief him on various issues, including alleged corrupt practices by the former CEB chairman.
