The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested an army commando soldier for allegedly supplying and repairing firearms and ammunition for Salintha Perera, an individual known as 'Commando Salintha', who was recently arrested in Indonesia.
The soldier is reportedly attached to the First Commando Regiment in Ganemulla.
The arrest follows the capture of an organised gang of five, including Kehelbadde Padme, in Jakarta, Indonesia. Padme, 'Commando Salintha,' and 'Kudu' Nilanga of Panadura are currently being held and questioned by the CID's Commercial Crimes Investigation Division 1.
A senior police officer stated that information uncovered during Salintha Perera's interrogation led to the suspect soldier's arrest. The soldier is accused of selling military equipment, including T-56 and 9mm pistol ammunition, to 'Commando Salintha' for money. He is also alleged to have repaired a firearm used in criminal activities.
The 37-year-old suspect is a resident of several areas, including Aramaya Road in Dematagoda, and Siyapath Sewana, Elvitigala Mawatha, in Narahenpita. The investigation is ongoing, and it is being handled by the CID's Commercial Crimes Investigation Division 1.
