A new program to establish recycling centres within all local government institutions, under 'Clean Sri Lanka' initiative, will be launched by the Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government.
The project aims to convert solid waste into reusable materials to promote sustainability.
The first centre was launched yesterday (23) at the Kattankudy Urban Council at a cost of Rs. 50.8 million.
There are plans to establish recycling centres in all nine provinces, with a total of 54 sites identified so far.
The locations were chosen based on where significant amounts of non-degradable waste are generated in those areas.
Feasibility studies have already been completed for 25 of these sites.
The main goal of the project is to reduce the volume of waste sent to sanitary landfills by 30% over the next three years.
This will be accomplished through promoting the 3R concept—Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle—and strengthening local institutions to manage segregated waste effectively.
The initiative is coordinated by the 'Clean Sri Lanka' Secretariat, with support from various government bodies, including the Defence Ministry, the tri-forces, and the Civil Security Department.
It is also backed by volunteer organisations, environmental groups, and local communities.
A range of officials, including ministers, mayors, and other local representatives, participated in the program's launch.
