The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) has reported two fatalities due to the prevailing adverse weather conditions affecting several parts of Sri Lanka.

The most severely impacted districts include Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Galle, and Kegalle, with 583 people affected.

One confirmed death occurred in Peradeniya, where a 53-year-old resident, Suriyagoda, was buried under an earth embankment while walking near a canal during heavy rain.

Assistant Director of the DMC, Pradeep Kodippili, confirmed the total fatalities as two.

The Deduru Oya and Mahaweli River basins are currently at risk of flooding.

The Department of Irrigation reported that the Deduru Oya water level has reached the spill level, while low-lying areas in the Maha Oya basin may face significant flooding within the next 36 hours.

Sluice gates of reservoirs including Rajaangane, Kalawewa, Deduru Oya, Ibbankatuwa, and Polgolla remain open.

The Department of Meteorology noted heavy rainfall due to a low-level atmospheric disturbance southeast of the island.

In the 24 hours ending at 8:30 AM today, Avissawella recorded 117.4 mm of rainfall, with Kirindiwela and Thampana also exceeding 100 mm.

Today, Hikkaduwa has recorded the highest rainfall so far. Authorities warned that the disturbance could develop into a low-pressure area, urging fishermen and naval personnel to exercise extreme caution.

Roads have been severely affected, with the Kongaspitiya road in Siyambalanduwa completely inundated, and the main road from Delthota to Kireeteweli in Kandy submerged.

Additionally, the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued landslide warnings for the next 24 hours across nine districts: Badulla, Colombo, Galle, Kandy, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Matale, Nuwara Eliya, and Ratnapura.

Residents in affected areas are urged to take all necessary precautions as heavy rain and flooding continue.
