The Leader of the Opposition, Sajith Premadasa, today (24) informed Parliament that Jagath Vithana, the Samagi̇ Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Member of Parliament for the Kal̇uṯhara District, has received death threats.

Premadasa urged the Speaker to immediately intervene and ensure his protection, calling the situation "extremely serious."

Addressing the House, MP Jagath Vithana stated that a confidential report from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) had been sent to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Kalutara.

The report warned that there was a plan to assassinate him as he was leaving his house in his vehicle and requested an investigation into the matter.

MP Vithana tabled the confidential report and appealed to the Deputy Speaker, who was presiding, to take immediate steps to beef up his security. "They have said they are going to assassinate me. Therefore, please give me protection. Ensure my security," he pleaded.

Responding again, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa reminded the House that the Chairman of the Weligama Divisional Council had also requested security earlier but was denied, leading to his assassination.

He urged the Deputy Speaker to prevent such a situation from recurring and to give urgent and increased attention to the security of MP Jagath Vithana and other Opposition MPs.

Deputy Speaker Rizvie Salih stated that the matter would be brought to the attention of the Speaker.
