Eleven Ghanaian nationals accused of defrauding Sri Lankan Member of Parliament and former Governor M. L. A. M. Hizbullah of US$ 2 million (over Rs. 600 million) have been granted bail by a Ghanaian court.

According to the Ghana News Agency, the suspects were charged with conspiracy to commit crime, defrauding by false pretense, and attempted fraud. Each was granted bail with a surety of 500,000 Ghanaian Cedis and required to provide two sureties, one of whom must own landed property with the original deed deposited with the court registrar.

The suspects granted bail are Abdul Rauf Adam, Almammoudi Sale, Yo Atta Antwi, Osman Suleman, Nhyiraaba Dwamena, Benscarl Dwamena, Sanfor Mubasir, Salla Mammoudi, Ahmed Ishaq, Umaru Pafadenam, and Salifu Suleman.

Police Chief Inspector Jacob Kubal told the court that the complainants were officers from Ghana’s National Security Council Secretariat. He revealed that the accused are part of a syndicate that defrauds victims by posing as gold dealers. Investigations showed that in 2023, the suspects, led by Sale, defrauded Hizbullah of US$ 2 million under the pretext of supplying gold, but failed to deliver the consignment and cut off contact after receiving the funds.

Later, the group re-established contact with Hizbullah and offered to sell him 50 kilograms of gold, even signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to appear legitimate. Following a complaint, the Ghanaian National Security team arrested the suspects at Weija S. C. C. on October 16, 2025.

Two pieces of yellow metal suspected to be gold were seized and are currently being tested for authenticity. The court has yet to record a plea as investigations are ongoing. The suspects are scheduled to reappear in court on November 20, 2025.
