A 21-year-old Canadian national was arrested early today (28) by the Customs Narcotics Control Division at Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake, for attempting to smuggle hashish valued at Rs. 182.5 million through the Green Channel.


The suspect, a student reportedly pursuing higher education, had arrived from Dubai around midnight on a private airline.


Customs officers discovered 18.253 kilograms of hashish hidden in 72 smaller packets inside six large polythene packages in his luggage.


The arrested individual and the seized drugs were handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau at Katunayake Airport for further investigation.
