Samagi Jana Balawegaya Kalutara District Member of Parliament Jagath Vithana announced his decision to raise a privilege issue in Parliament against the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Priyantha Weerasuriya.

The MP stated that he will submit the Privilege Issue to the Speaker, Jagath Wickramaratne, during the upcoming Parliament sitting week.

The MP pointed out that the IGP had violated his privileges by allegedly stating that the provision of police security to him was due to his connections with the underworld.

MP Vithana emphasised that the IGP making such statements—which violate his privileges—when providing security as mandated by the Speaker's order, is an extremely serious situation.

The MP further highlighted that the confidential report submitted by the IGP to the Kalutara Senior Superintendent of Police regarding the death threats he faces does not contain any charges against him.

Given this, the MP contends that falsely accusing him of having underworld connections is a grave injustice and constitutes a violation of his parliamentary privileges.

Considering all these factors, MP Jagath Vithana stated that he will present the privilege issue to Parliament, requesting that the IGP be summoned before the Parliamentary Committee on Privileges for violating his privileges.
