A welcoming ceremony was held yesterday (28) in Katukele, Kandy, the hometown of athlete Shafiya Yamick, who won three Gold Medals at the recently concluded South Asian Games in India.

Shafiya Yamick, along with her coach M. P. Vithana, were brought to Katukele in an open vehicle and received a warm welcome from the residents.

The athlete and her coach thanked everyone who supported her journey, including the Ministry of Sports, the Army, her former school Vihara Maha Devi Balika, her coaches, and her parents.

During the event, both Shafiya Yamick and Coach Vithana stated that Shafiya's next major challenge is the Asian Games.

Shafiya expressed her hope to train diligently and perform well in the Asian Games.

She further declared her ambition to participate in the upcoming Olympic Games and win a medal for Sri Lanka.

The event was attended by Shafiya's parents, Kandy Deputy Mayor Ruwan Kumara, Kandy Municipal Commissioner Indika Abesinghe, and other dignitaries.
