The Colombo High Court today (28) ordered the case filed against S. M. Ranjith, the former Chief Minister of the North Central Province, on charges of corruption under the Bribery Act, to be recalled on November 28.

The case was called before Colombo High Court Judge Mohamed Mihail.

During the hearing, counsel for both parties informed the court that several productions (case items) and documents related to the current case were filed in connection with an associated case in the High Court No. 4.

Considering these facts, the Judge ordered the case to be recalled on November 28 for further consideration.

The Bribery Commission filed this case against the former Chief Minister and his personal secretary

The defendants were accused of engaging in corruption while S. M. Ranjith served as the Chief Minister of the North Central Provincial Council between September 27, 2012 and December 31, 2014.

The main charge alleged that the former Chief Minister illegally obtained fuel, causing a loss to the government, despite already receiving a salary inclusive of a fuel allowance.

In total, the Bribery Commission filed six charges, including the illegal provision of fuel using order sheets amounting to over Rs. 2.6 million to his personal secretary, Shanthi Chandrasena, and aiding and abetting public officials to commit this offence.

Following the conclusion of the trial, the High Court on April 2 of the previous year found that the prosecution had proven the charges against the defendants beyond a reasonable doubt and sentenced them to 16 years of rigorous imprisonment.
