The former President attended the Colombo Fort Magistrate's Court today (29).


He appeared in relation to the case concerning the alleged use of government funds for a private visit during his tenure as President.


The Bribery Commission filed a case against him for causing a loss to the government exceeding Rs. 15 million by traveling to London for his spouse's graduation ceremony, claiming it was a private visit while he was in office.


In connection with this incident, the former President was arrested and produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate.


He was subsequently remanded from August 22 to the 26. However, due to an illness, he was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital for treatment based on the recommendations of prison hospital doctors.


When the case was recalled on August 26, he participated via Skype technology as he was still receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital. He was granted bail that day.
