Hambantota International Port (HIP) has launched its Automated Gate Pass Management System (AGPMS), becoming the first port in Sri Lanka to introduce a fully automated, QR-code-based, paperless gate pass solution.

The initiative marks a major step forward in HIP’s digital transformation journey, strengthening efficiency, security, and access control across port operations.

The system was officially inaugurated at the Hambantota Maritime Centre in the presence of HIP management and staff, together with representatives from Data Management Services (DMS), the technology partner that developed the platform. HIPG Chief Executive Officer Wilson Qu attended the event as the Chief Guest.

AGPMS replaces the traditional manual gate pass process with a paperless, QR-based access control system, enabling faster and more secure verification at port entry points while significantly reducing processing time, human error, and administrative complexity.

The new system is designed to enhance security, operational efficiency, transparency, and traceability. It also delivers a more customer-friendly and streamlined permit issuance process, improving the overall experience for port users and easing traffic flow within the port.

HIPG CEO Wilson Qu said the initiative reflects the port’s long-term vision for smart operations. “The Automated Gate Pass Management System is a key milestone in our journey towards smart port operations. By adopting a fully automated, QR-based system, we are strengthening security, improving efficiency, and aligning our operations with global best practices,” he said.

Capt. Miyuru Gunasekara, General Manager of Hambantota International Port Services (HIPS), noted that AGPMS also enables real-time monitoring and improved compliance, supporting tighter access control and greater accountability across port operations, adding that the system would deliver immediate operational benefits.

“AGPMS enhances gate-level control by ensuring faster processing, improved safety, and better visibility of access movements, while delivering a smoother experience for authorised users,” he said.

The launch of AGPMS marks the first phase of HIP’s broader push towards fully digitalised port operations.
