A brand-new mammal species endemic to Sri Lanka came to light from the Puwakpitiya valley in the Dumbara mountain range of the Matale district.

Professor Suyama H. Boyagoda, Professor Madhava Meegaskumbura, and Doctor Kelum Manamendra-Arachchi introduced this discovery to the scientific world following extensive research.

A renowned global scientific journal, "ZooKeys," published the official research paper detailing the finding.

The scientific classification of this newly identified living being stands as follows:

Scientific Name: Mus DUMBARA
English Name: Dumbara valley spiny mouse
Sinhala Name: දුම්බර කටු හීන් මීයා

The researchers highlighted the unique nature of this find, pointing out that while the majority of mice belonging to this genus reside in dry zone ecosystems, this specific species lives in a wet zone mountainous forest.

The documentation of another endemic species from the borders of the Dumbara World Heritage forest confirms the unparalleled biodiversity inherent to this ecosystem.
