A fisherman aboard a multi-day fishing vessel that departed from the Hikkaduwa Fisheries Harbour has mysteriously gone missing at sea, according to Hikkaduwa Police.
Police Headquarters said a broad investigation has been launched following a complaint lodged by the owner of the fishing vessel.
The missing fisherman is a 53-year-old resident of Meetiyagoda.
Preliminary police investigations revealed that a six-member fishing crew had left for fishing yesterday (02) aboard the vessel.
The boat had reportedly travelled about 15 nautical miles from shore when, during preparations for a meal last night (02), the crew noticed that the fisherman was missing from the vessel.
The crew subsequently informed authorities on land about the incident.
Hikkaduwa Police are conducting further investigations to determine whether the fisherman fell overboard or if another incident led to his disappearance.
