Cabinet approval was granted for a proposal to transfer the Horana District General Hospital from Western Provincial Council administration to the Ministry of Health and Mass Media.

This transition includes all physical and financial assets of the facility.

Previously a base hospital, the institution underwent an upgrade to a district general hospital on June 3, 2022.

It currently maintains a capacity of 544 beds and an approved staff of 739.

The facility serves an estimated population of one million, providing centralised healthcare coverage to residents of the Horana area as well as parts of the Kalutara, Colombo, and Ratnapura districts.

Authorities identified the need to bring the hospital under central government oversight to enhance facilities and human resources, enabling the delivery of tertiary care services.

The Governor of the Western Province provided consent for this takeover, which aims to facilitate the further expansion of hospital services.
