Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa alleged that the tragic loss of life and injuries at Negombo prison stem from the collapse and inefficiency of the prison administration.

He recalls that the current President, while serving as an opposition member, once stated that the government must be held accountable for any loss of life within prisons.

Given the current casualties, Premadasa argues the current administration must now accept that same responsibility.

The opposition leader made these remarks during a special statement regarding the conflict.

He observes that while the government campaigned on changing the system, the recent events at Negombo prison demonstrate that the existing framework remains unsuccessful.

He questions the government’s inability to establish law and order and asks why a humane administration cannot be maintained within prisons.

The public remains watchful, and he insists the government owes the people an explanation.

Premadasa demands an independent, impartial investigation into the incident, specifically one conducted with transparency in Parliament.

He explicitly rejects the formation of government-led committees, noting that the situation requires a clear, objective inquiry rather than a report tailored to suit official preferences.

National security encompasses a broad perspective, including education, the economy, prisons, and law and order, the opposition leader notes.

He criticises the government’s past rhetoric on national security, urging them to set aside arrogance, remain humble, and provide genuine solutions to the problems currently facing the public.
