The Attorney General has requested the Court of Appeal today (06) to transfer the writ petition filed by former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to the Supreme Court.

The petition seeks an order preventing his arrest in connection with investigations related to the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks.

When the case was taken up today, Deputy Solicitor General Suharshi Herath, appearing for the respondents, submitted that the issues raised in the petition relate to fundamental rights matters and therefore fall outside the jurisdiction of the Court of Appeal.

Accordingly, she requested the court to issue an order referring the petition to the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, President’s Counsel Romesh de Silva, appearing for petitioner Gotabaya Rajapaksa, concluded his submissions.

Further hearing of the matter was postponed until July 9.
