The next four weeks remain critical regarding the dengue epidemic based on current reports. Minister of Health Dr Nalinda Jayatissa stated this while participating in a programme held in Colombo today (06).

A decision was made to introduce the vaccine produced for the dengue virus to the country.

The number of dengue patients reported so far this year stands at 61,060, and 39 individuals have lost their lives by now.

Only within the first 5 days of this month, 5,663 patients were reported. Acting Director of the National Dengue Control Unit, Kapila Kannangara, stated this.

Five children below the age of 5 years are also among the dead.

Meanwhile, the special dengue control operation implemented throughout the week covering 22 high-risk dengue zones in the Western Province functioned for the second day today.

However, the shortage of technical staff became an issue in controlling the dengue epidemic. Acting President of the Public Health Inspectors' Association Upul Rohana stated this during a press conference held today.
