In the letter dated today (07), Namal Rajapaksa points out that the government is attempting to extend the retirement age of Supreme Court judges without any acceptable justifiable reason.
He further mentions that this action would have a severe impact on the rule of law in the country as well as the democratic process.
The letter also mentions that the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL), the Law Association for Asia and the Pacific (LAWASIA), and the Commonwealth Lawyers Association have already expressed their displeasure and protest regarding this attempt to extend the age limit.
Namal Rajapaksa requests Sajith Premadasa, as the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, to organise a special meeting by summoning all democratic parties to discuss this serious situation.
Furthermore, Rajapaksa concludes the letter by stating that it would be appropriate to summon the leaders of all political parties that have represented Parliament so far, as well as other political party leaders deemed suitable for this, and that he expects the Opposition Leader's immediate attention to this important matter.
