Government plans to create 250,000 foreign employment opportunities for Sri Lankans during this year, the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment said.

The Bureau mentioned that arrangements are made to provide these employment opportunities to Sri Lankans through the Sri Lankan government and job agencies registered with the Bureau.

The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment said that although a slight drop in Sri Lankans going abroad for jobs is shown due to the war situation existing in the Middle East, steps are being taken to direct workers to high-paying jobs in safe destinations.

Accordingly, 143,087 Sri Lankans went abroad for jobs during the elapsed period of the year, and the number of male workers out of that is 92,590.

The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment mentions that 50,497 female workers also went abroad for jobs during this period.

The Bureau plans to direct 14,000 workers to the State of Israel, which is a destination currently popular among Sri Lankan workers, and the Bureau mentions that 7,873 workers have already migrated to Israel for jobs as of now.

Likewise, directing 8,000 workers to South Korea is expected, and the Bureau says that 4,794 out of that have already left by now.

Furthermore, Bureau data reports show that 73,623 workers went abroad during the elapsed period of 2026 for skilled jobs, while 69,494 workers left for jobs in the unskilled category.

Meanwhile, the Bureau also mentions that Sri Lankan workers abroad remitted a sum of 4.6 billion US dollars to the country during the 6-month period from January to June this year.
