The 79th annual Esala Procession of the historic Utpala Vanna Sri Vishnu Maha Devalaya in Devinuwara is scheduled to parade the streets during an auspicious time between 3.30 p.m. and 7 p.m. today (29).

Strict security measures are in place for the procession.

The Randoli Procession will carry the sacred casket and ritual regalia, featuring a large number of elephants and dance troupes, according to our reporters.

The sixth 'Peli' Kavadi Procession, which generated considerable controversy in recent days, commenced yesterday (28) at the auspicious time of 2.55 p.m. and concluded at night.

Nearly 1,700 security personnel are deployed under the direct supervision of Southern Province Senior Deputy Inspector General Kithsiri Jayalath, including 1,200 police officers, 150 Special Task Force officers led by Superintendent of Police Vaevitavithanage, 200 intelligence officers, and army personnel.

Yesterday's Kavadi Procession featured 31 kavadi troupes, 32 dance troupes, and three elephants, with special police protection provided for every kavadi troupe.

During the first Peli Procession held on July 23, to which Basnayake Nilame Arachchige Thilina Madusanka participated, while retired Grama Niladhari Rohana Jayasinghe served as the Basnayake Nilame for the other Peli Processions.

Well-known Devinuwara businessman Nuwanjith Sellahewa is scheduled to participate as Basnayake Nilame for the final Randoli Main Procession.
