Several small-capacity tanks are facing potential drying conditions due to prevailing El Nino patterns, according to Irrigation Director General Dr. Kitsiri Weligepola.
The public are requested to effectively manage and conserve water during agricultural and day-to-day activities given the current low reservoir capacities.
The Irrigation Department assured the public that there is enough supply of drinking water in these reservoirs.
The total irrigation system water capacity and rainfall reductions may affect the cultivation land areas for the upcoming major season, the director general noted.
Plans are established to retain necessary water volumes for the major season commencing in October.
