The Air Force Media Spokesperson stated that a Bell 412 helicopter and drones have been deployed to monitor the situation.
An unrest situation arose within the Mahara Prison in the afternoon of Saturday, August 1.
It is reported that this situation emerged when a group of relatives had come to visit an inmate, another group of inmates have thrown stones out of the prison.
The Police, the Police Special Task Force, and the Riot Suppression Unit were called into control the situation.
During the tense situation, a group of inmates also set fire to a building within the prison premises.
It is also reported that several places in the prison were also damaged, including the prisoner registration division and the chief jailer's office.
During the unrest, 7 people were injured and were later admitted to the Ragama Hospital where one person succumbed to his injuries.
