Police curfew imposed until further notice on three Grama Niladhari divisions in the Ragama police area remains active.

Following the tense situation that arose at the Mahara Prison yesterday (01) afternoon, this police curfew was enforced across the Kendaliyadda North, Kendaliyadda West, and Dambuwa Grama Niladhari divisions.

Seven individuals injured during that unrest at the Mahara Prison were admitted to the Ragama Hospital, and one of them died.

Steps were taken to summon the Special Task Force, the army, and the riot control unit in addition to the police to control the situation.

Damage was also reported to several locations within the Mahara Prison during this incident.

The Air Force stated that a Bell 412 helicopter and a drone belonging to the Air Force were deployed last night for operations to monitor the unrest at the Mahara Prison.

Upon hearing about the incident, a tense situation erupted yesterday afternoon between a group of relatives of inmates who gathered near the prison and the security forces.

Officers from the publicity division of the Ragama Police subsequently arrived at the location last night to announce the enforcement of the police curfew.

The army commander and the defence secretary also inspected the location subsequently.

Minister of Justice Harshana Nanayakkara stated to Hiru News that a group of inmates at the Mahara Prison staged a protest by climbing onto a roof.
