Prisons Media Spokesman Commissioner A.C. Gajanayake says the unrest that broke out at Mahara Prison yesterday(01) has now been completely brought under control and the normal situation restored.

He said that the prison's kitchen had been completely destroyed by fire set during the unrest, and that the rehabilitation building opened for inmates yesterday had also been completely destroyed.

He further stated that the Chief Jailer's office had been completely destroyed and the prison hospital has been significantly damaged.

Prisons Media Spokesman Commissioner A.C. Gajanayake said:
"Roofing sheets used for an office premises under construction are been torn down and destroyed. They had also attempted to attack the main gate. They had been continuing the unrest that began yesterday right through until this morning. Prison officers, police officers, special task force officers, along with air force and navy personnel, have now brought the inmates to a peaceful state. Seven inmates were hospitalised as a result of the incident. One of them has died. We also appeal to the relatives of the inmates to remain calm and peaceful without causing any disturbance."
