With the touch of a button, US President Donald Trump has hinted at rewriting history once again, blasting out a series of social media posts renaming the fifth-largest US state.

The seven posts shared with his 13 million followers on Trump’s American social media platform Truth Social and X showed various maps striking out or replacing the name of ‘New Mexico’ with ‘New America’.

Posted on Monday without context or comment, and re-shared by the official White House account on X, the renamed maps continue a broader pattern from the Trump administration’s cartographic chaos in renaming US landmarks as part of Trump’s “America First” ideology.

The images appear to be testing public reaction online, fuelling speculation that Trump could be planning to officially try to rename the state.

The White House has made no formal announcements.

The social media posts come just days after Trump signed an executive order changing Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America’ amid his trade war with Canada, after he imposed sweeping tariffs to the neighbouring country and Canada responded by matching the United States dollar for dollar.

The move would mean a rewrite of all US federal maps, documents, and other communications.

The major change also follows another executive order Trump penned in January last year, on his very first day in office, when he renamed The Gulf of Mexico to the ‘Gulf of America’.

While Trump’s executive orders only carry authority within US borders, and give him the power to rename geographical landmarks and bodies of water domestically, the changes are not required to be recognised internationally or by other countries.
