The two models feature a new 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, allowing the lens opening to adjust for lighting and depth of field. Users can also manually control four aperture settings, while new Pro controls in the Camera app add access to shutter speed, white balance and exposure information.
Apple has also introduced Apple Reference Image, an opt-in feature designed to help verify whether a photograph has been altered. In Reference mode, the camera records signed sensor data that can be used to create an unalterable reference image for comparison with edited versions.
Both phones are powered by the A20 Pro, built using a 2-nanometre process. Apple says the chip has 50% more memory bandwidth than the A19 Pro and includes a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and dual 16-core Neural Engine. The company says graphics performance is up to 40% faster than the previous generation.
A redesigned vapour-chamber cooling system has three times the surface area of the one used in the iPhone 17 Pro, which Apple says improves sustained performance.
Battery life has also increased. Apple says eSIM-only versions provide up to 36 hours of video playback on the iPhone 18 Pro and 45 hours on the Pro Max. The iPhone 18 Pro can charge to 50% in about 15 minutes with a compatible wired charger.
The phones run iOS 27 and support the new Siri AI, which can use information from messages, emails and photos, understand content displayed on screen and perform actions across supported apps. Siri AI will begin rolling out in beta on 14 September, initially in English.
Other changes include a smaller Dynamic Island capable of displaying three Live Activities simultaneously, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 through Apple's N1 networking chip, and the new C2 cellular modem.
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will be available in black, silver, glacier and burgundy, with storage options of 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB.
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299 in the US. Pre-orders open on 12 September, with sales beginning on September 18 in more than 65 countries and regions.
