The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D and return of Leatherface shrugged off ominous critical reviews and easily won its opening day at the box office on Friday by topping The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
Lionsgate rolled out Texas Chainsaw 3D at 2,654 theaters and came away with a total of $10.2 million in ticket sales, including $1.15 million from Thursday midnight screenings.
The Hobbit added another $5.2 million to its pot of earnings that now stand at $251.5 million domestically.
