The Government stated that its intention to bring the administration of local government bodies under commissioners and secretaries is to hold the election on a single day.

Public Administration Minister Karu Jayasuriya stated this today when our news team contacted him regarding the matter.

The term of office of 234 local government institutions including Dambulla, Bandarawela and Akkaraipaththu Municipal Councils would expire with effect from midnight today.

These include 30 Urban Councils including Seethawaka, Maharagama, Wattala, Kuliyapitiya and Tangalle and 201 Pradeshiya Sabhas.

The chief administrative officers of these local government bodies would take over the administration of these local government bodies with effect from tonight.

Accordingly, the administration of Municipal Councils will be taken over by their Commissioners while the administration of Urban Councils and Pradeshiya Sabhas will be taken over by their respective secretaries.

The 9 local government bodies of which the term of office expired on March 17th have been placed under the administration of the respective state officials already.

At the same time, another local body of which the term of office expired on August 24th last year has already been placed under the administration of its secretary.

The term of office of another local body has been extended, after its term expired on August 31st.

Elections for Puthukkudiyiruppu and Maritimepattu Pradeshiya Sabhas have not been held yet as there is a case pending with regard to the two local government bodies.

In addition, the term of office of 65 local bodies to be expired on July 31st while another 21 local bodies to be expired on October 16th.

Accordingly, the government is looking forward to hold elections for the entire 335 local government bodies on a single day.

Meanwhile, addressing a ceremony held at Payagala last Tuesday, President Maithripala Sirisena expressed his views about the decision to bring the administration of local government institutions under their respective officials.

MP Dallas Alahapperuma, addressing a public gathering held at Dikwella in Matara this morning grieved over the decision to bring local government administration under state officers.

Meanwhile, UPFA General Secretary Susil Premajayantha questioned about bringing the administration of local government bodies under commissioners and secretaries notwithstanding the already publicized criteria.

He raised this question during Balaya political program telecast on Hiru TV last night.

However, public administration minister Karu Jayasuriya said that election for local government bodies would be held under the proposed electoral system in the future.
