Speaker proposes to dissolve Parliament

Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa made a statement in parliament today that he too will propose to dissolve the parliament.

The Speaker stated this after MPs of the ruling party stood to support the statement made by Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella to dissolve the parliament.

Meanwhile, Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa decided to adjourn parliament for a short while to hold an emergency party leaders meeting on the Constitutional Council.

The Speaker stated that the meeting will be held in his official room.

A decision was taken during the party leaders’ meeting convened this morning, to adjourn parliament for a short while following the round of questions raised under the Standing Orders, and to discuss regarding the key matters scheduled for the day.

MP Dinesh Gunawardena reminded the matter, and the Speaker took the decision to adjourn parliament.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasingha addressing the parliament stated that the opposition only knows to obstruct.
