The death penalty imposed by a Saudi court on a Sri Lankan housemaid will be carried out today, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Parliamentarian M.A. Sumanthiran stated this a short while ago at the Parliament.
A TNA MP M.A. Sumandiran revealed in parliament today that the convicted Sri Lankan housemaid in Saudi arabia will be stoned to death.
He said all Sri Lankans irrespective of their race or creed are saddened by the Saudi death sentence.
A Saudi court ordered that the Sri Lankan housemaid be stoned, for having an illegal affair with a man. Sri Lankan government made an appeal against the death sentence.
The accused is a married Muslim woman from Maradana.
The man has also been subject to 100 lashes.
Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera and Foreign Employment Minister Thalatha Athukorala recently met the Saudi Arabian Ambassador and made an appeal to have the death sentence wiped.
The National Sangha Council performed a Sathyakriya in front of the Saudi Embassy in Colombo requesting that the authorities spare the womans life. Several international civil organizations have also launched online petitions against the death sentence.
Meanwhile our news team contacted the Sri Lankan Ambassador in Saudi Arabia Azmi Thasim to comment on the statement made by MP Sumandiran in parliament today.
Ambassador Thasim said that his office has not yet been informed of such a decision.
He further said he has been informed by Saudi authorities that he would be given an opportunity to meet the victim.
