Meetotamulla Garbage issue re-emerges

A tense situation erupted at Meetotamulla today when residents staged a protest against the garbage mound.

Residents jeered at former chairman of Kolonnawa Urban Council Ravindra Udaya Shantha as he arrived at the scene.

Protests took place today as garbage was observed flowing around the Wimalarama Temple in Wellampitiya this morning.  

Residents lodged a complaint against this situation to Wellampitiya police.

Later they held the keys of two backhoes of the Colombo Municipal Council which were parked in the premises.

Meanwhile, the director in charge of the solid waste management unit of the Colombo Municipal Council and the engineer in charge of the Meetotamulla Garbage mound arrived at the scene.

The residents requested them to remove the garbage from the area as agreed and asked them to take measures to prevent filth from spreading in the area.

The Municipal officers promised the residents to settle the issue within three weeks.
