The fire which erupted in the Meethotamulla garbage mound yesterday (Jan. 01) is believed to have been caused by a chemical reaction.

A spokesperson from the Colombo Fire Brigade stated that Methane could be the reason for the fire.

He said although the fire was completely doused by 3 pm yesterday, smoke is still emitting intermittently from the garbage mound.

Meanwhile, police have asked the Government Analyst, Geological and Mining Bureau and Urban Development Authority and several other respective organizations to conduct investigations into the fire.

Police Media Spokesperson Office said that several police teams have been deployed in Meethotamulla and the surrounding areas due to the prevailing situation.
