Police say that the tense situation that prevailed in the Kataragama area has now been fully controlled.

However, a team of Special Task Force personnel has been deployed in the area to maintain law and order.

The residents of Kataragama staged demonstrations in the town and even attacked the police station after a motorcyclist was shot dead by a police constable a day before yesterday (Jan. 20).

Police said that the police constable had opened fire on a motorcycle when it did not respond to a signal to stop.

The rider, a 25-year-old father of one and another person sustained injuries in the shooting and the rider died after being admitted to Kataragama Hospital.

Police arrested 58 persons including 13 women for behaving in an unruly manner and they were produced before courts and released on bail later.

The suspected police constable meanwhile was remanded until 30th of this month.

A special team from the Criminal Investigation Department has already begun probing the incident.
