Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles has instructed the Inspector General of Police and other relevant departments to take necessary measures to strengthen the security of Colombo, Sri Jayawardenepura and Kelaniya universities.
That is according to a request made by the vice-chancellors of those universities to the minister.
Colombo University Vice-Chancellor Senior Lecturer H.D. Karunaratne and a group of senior professors recently met with Public Security Minister Tiran Alles and IGP C.D Wickramaratne and Western Province Senior DIG Deshbandhu Tennakoon were present on this occasion.
Taking into consideration the Vice Chancellor's request to strengthen the security near the students' dormitories, Minister Tiran Alles has also instructed the IGP to increase the number of night police patrols near the University of Colombo.
Also, a group of professors including University of Sri Jayawardenepura Vice-Chancellor Upul Subhasinghe met Minister Tiran Alles.
Minister Tiran Alles inquired about the safety of the students of Jayawardenepura University and the Vice-Chancellor had stated that security should be beefed up near the hostels of the university students.
Accordingly, the minister ordered to increase the number of security patrols near the university.
