The incident unfolded when immigration officials were conducting routine checks on passengers scheduled to board a flight bound for Colombo on Thursday night.
Upon scrutinizing the travel documents of Ramachandran (45) and his wife Hanisha (40) from Perambalur, officials discovered that both individuals were in possession of counterfeit passports intended for their journey.
Further investigation revealed that the couple, originally from Sri Lanka, had been residing in Perambalur for several years. During this time, they managed to obtain Indian identity documents, including ration cards, establishing a semblance of local residency.
The decision to visit Sri Lanka prompted them to acquire fake passports bearing their Perambalur address.
Upon uncovering this deception, immigration officials detained the couple and promptly notified the Central Crime Branch police and Q Branch authorities. Subsequently, officers from these units arrived at the Chennai airport, where they conducted thorough inquiries for several hours.
Following the inquiries, Ramachandran and Hanisha were formally arrested and escorted to the Central Crime Branch office of the Chennai police for further legal proceedings.
