The Yorkshire County Cricket Club has announced the signing of Sri Lankan international fast bowler Vishwa Fernando for the next three matches in the Vitality County Championship.

Fernando, a 32-year-old left-arm fast bowler, returns to county cricket after a stint with Durham at the end of last season, where he took seven wickets in two matches for the Division Two champions. He has now joined the Yorkshire squad, currently playing against Sussex at Hove, and will also participate in upcoming matches against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road, Gloucestershire at Scarborough, and Derbyshire at Chesterfield next month.

Fernando, who has taken 64 wickets in 23 Test matches for Sri Lanka since his debut against Australia in Galle in 2016, is poised to achieve a milestone with his first wicket for Yorkshire, which will be the 300th of his first-class career. His most recent Test appearance was against Bangladesh in Chattogram in April, where he claimed three wickets in a Sri Lankan victory.

In addition to his Test exploits, Fernando has played eight one-day internationals and one T20 international for Sri Lanka. His best Test bowling figures are 5-101, and his best first-class figures are 5-14, with ten five-wicket hauls in his 113 first-class appearances.

Fernando will fill Yorkshire's second overseas slot in the Championship, joining captain Shan Masood, who was one of Fernando's wickets during their Test match encounter in Karachi in 2019. Having played his last first-class match in Sri Lanka late last month and participated in domestic T20 cricket through early May, Fernando is expected to bring his strong action and good pace to bolster Yorkshire's bowling attack.

Fans can look forward to seeing Fernando in action as he aims to make a significant impact in the Vitality County Championship matches ahead.
