The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) said that Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake had resumed duties yesterday as the Government had removed the prevalent impediments for carrying out the duties of her post.
The Bar Association President Upul Jayasuriya said Dr. Shirani Bandaranayaka can hold her position as the 43rd Chief Justice of Sri Lanka as the Government has removed all obstacles imposed on her earlier.
However Jayasuriya said that Dr. Bandaranayaka who assumed duties yesterday would retire from her post today.
The government stated the removal of Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake is illegal therefore the replacement of the post with Mohan Peries was invalid.
A notice issued by the presidential media unit stated that a proposal was made to parliament to appoint a special select committee in order to propose to the President to remove Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake.
The statement further says, although that proposal was approved, a proposal to remove Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake was not approved.

Accordingly, several civil organizations and the Bar Association staged a protest in front of the Supreme Court Complex yesterday demanding Mohan Peries to resign.
Meanwhile Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake arrived at Chief Justice’s Office at the Supreme Court yesterday.
Bar Association members welcomed Dr. Bandaranayake on her arrival at the Supreme Court Complex, and the proceedings that took place inside afterward were not exposed to the media.
