Person dies, when police tried to arrest a woman: Residents’ protest against police causing tense situation in Grandpass
A tense situation occurred in State Road area in Grandpass Colombo this afternoon.
According to Police media spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekara, the tense situation broke out when a person suddenly died while protesting against the arrest of a woman by a group of officers from the Colombo North Divisional Raid Unit.
The deceased person is a 65 year old D.P. Premasiri from the same area.
However, the relatives of the victim told our news team that he died after the police officers assaulted him.
After the death was reported, the residents of the area staged a protest by burning tyres, causing the police to stop the traffic along Kosgashandiya to Orugodawatta.
However, Police media spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekara stated that an investigation is currently underway under the supervision of the SSP in charge of Colombo North.
Police media spokesman also reiterated that, if the investigation proves that the death was caused due to a fault of the police officers, legal action will be taken against the relevant officers.
