President Maithripala Sirisena paid his last respects to the remains of the late Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thera last night.
Large crowds have been gathering at Kotte Sri Naaga Viharaya to also pay their last respects.
His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasingha, former president Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Opposition Leader R. SamBandan and Chief Opposition Whip Anura Kumara Dissanayake paid their last respects to the remains of the late Thera.
In addition several other politicians including Minister Rauff Hakeem, MP Dinesh Gunawardana, and Democratic Party Leader Field Martial Sarath Fonseka also paid their last respects.
Meanwhile a special holiday has been declared for all schools within the Jayewardenepura Educational Zone on November 12th, due to the funeral of the late Thera.
Western Provincial Education Minister Ranjith Somawansa said special holiday is applicable to all students except those studying in Year 10 and Year 11.
At the same time, the Prime Minister has decided to include the legacy of late Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thera to the school syllabus with effect from next year.
This was announced by Home Affairs Minister Vajira Abeywardana during a media conference held in Colombo this morning.
