The Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy says that the island-wide power failure was caused by a technical fault occurred in a transformer at the Biyagama Grid substation, which connects the lines supplying power from Mahaweli Power Station to Colombo.

This is the second time an island-wide power failure occurred within 17 days.

However, the Chairman of the CEB Anura Wijepala has decided to resign from his position after taking responsibility for the island-wide power failure.

Previously, an island-wide power failure which lasted nearly 3 hours was reported on the 25th of last month.

Later it was revealed that a technical fault occurred in the high voltage cables transmitting power from Lakshapana power station to Kolonnawa via Polpitiya power station has caused the power outage.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has ordered the relevant authorities to probe into the matter of the power failures and to find out if they were caused by sabotage.

The power failure occurred after 2 PM today, consequently leading several hydro power stations – including Canyon, Lakshapana, Polpitiya, Wimalasurendra, Upper Kotmale and Kotmale to cease operations automatically.

However, the power is currently being restored.

Expressing his views to our news team, the Secretary of the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy Suren Batagoda stated that they are conducting studies with local and foreign intellects to prevent such power outages in future.

Meanwhile, due to the islandwide power failure, the Ambatale Water treatment plant has also ceased its operations.

Deputy General Manager of the Plant, Ranjith Perera told our news team that if the situation persists, they would have to interrupt the water supply to Colombo, Dehiwala, Pitakotte and Battaramulla.
