The 20-year-old youth who was abducted for a ransom of Rs. 20 million was found in Nikaweratiya this morning.
He was found following information by two suspects arrested in connection to the incident.
The youth was held in a place in Nikaweratiya town.
A senior police official attached to the Wariyapola police said that the youth was released by the group after the two suspects were arrested.
The youth, Mohamad Ashik, was abducted on Thursday (12) night. He was thus taken when he was returning home on a bicycle from his father’s shop. His father is a renowned businessman in the area.
A broad investigation commenced following a complaint lodged with Wariyapola Police.
Based on the directions of the Police, the relatives of the youth took measures to collect the required sum, and the matter was informed to the abductors.
The group has then informed the relatives of the youth to handover the money at various locations in Kurunegala district, but continued to elude each time.
Meanwhile, following a tipoff received by the police, an owner of a hybrid vehicle was arrested in Wariyapola area.
After questioning the suspect, Police unraveled information of 6 other persons connected to the abduction incident.
Accordingly, police arrested another person last afternoon.
Later an unidentified caller has informed the relatives that they would drop the abducted youth near the clock tower in Nikaweratiya town.
Accordingly, Police officers were able to rescue the youth at 5.30 am today.
Reports indicated that the abducted youth was detained in an abandoned house in Mahawa area, and was subjected to various physical harassments.
Bruises were found around the mouth of the youth, and he was admitted to Nikawaratiya Hospital and later transferred to Kurnegala Hospital for treatment.
Special police investigation is underway to arrest the remaining suspects in connection with the incident.
